A reference-image tutorial can become misleading when the product changes its tools. For this comparison, the creative task is a permitted, non-explicit illustration of an original adult cartographer at a map table.
The target is specific: preserve the cartographer’s navy coat and square spectacles while changing the view from a medium portrait to a wider room composition. There is no generated sample or quality ranking in this review.
Name the model before the reference control
Midjourney’s version page currently identifies V8.2 as the default. Its Edit Model documentation says the V8.1/V8.2 route replaces the earlier character-reference tools for those versions.
The source documents attaching up to four reference images and using written edit instructions. On web, open the image on Create or Organize, then choose Creation Actions → Quick Edit to attach it to the Imagine bar, or Open Editor for a targeted change. Omni Reference remains a V7-specific route, so a generic instruction to “use Omni Reference” is not a correct universal current workflow.
Frosting’s January 2026 notice announced Moonglow One beta with up to three starting images and an SFW-only scope at that time. This is historical product evidence, not confirmation that the same model and limits remain in today’s app.
Give a reference one clear job
For the cartographer, assign a purpose to each authorized image rather than adding images merely because the tool permits more.
| Reference purpose | What should remain | What may change |
|---|---|---|
| Character | Coat, spectacles, recognizable identity | Pose and camera |
| Room | Map table and shelves | Placement within the wider view |
| Style | Illustration treatment | Scene content |
These are planning categories, not a claim that either interface offers exactly those three labeled slots.
Midjourney’s Edit Model follows the first uploaded image’s aspect ratio by default and documents using an explicit aspect-ratio parameter to change it. If the intended result is a wide room, make that requirement deliberate rather than assuming the account’s default aspect ratio will apply.
Preserve the successful part of the image
When the character is right but the room is too tight, request a wider composition or use a suitable expansion edit. When the entire style is wrong, that is a different revision. Doing both at once makes the cause of a changed face harder to understand.
The Midjourney modification guide distinguishes variations, upscaling and editing actions. Its Edit Model documentation also lists compatibility limits, including no Remix for Edit Model results. Tools that sound adjacent are not necessarily available in the same workflow.
For Frosting, retain the actual model and reference controls shown in the production account. The public announcement does not supply enough evidence to prescribe an equivalent button sequence.
Keep a revision ledger
A useful note says “Version 2: widened the frame, kept character reference, changed no style instruction.” It gives the next attempt a clear basis. “Try again, better” does not.
Choose Midjourney’s documented current edit route when the need is a specified reference-based change with a public control path. Frosting’s dated notice establishes that reference-assisted work was announced for a particular beta, but current deployment and exact edits remain unverified.
Use original or authorized references and follow each provider’s content rules. The comparison concerns a policy-compliant creative task; no reference was uploaded or generation purchased.
